1. About the .us domain space

.us is the official country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the United States.

You can have either a name in the expanded space (for example, mycompany.us) or the locality space (for example, mycompany.new-york.ny.us).

2. How do I register a .us domain name with domainz?

Simply use our Country Code Domain Names (ccTLD) search and registration service to secure your name online immediately.

3. How many years can a .us domain name be registered for?

.us domain names can be registered for anything between 1 and 10 years.

4. What passwords do I need to manage my .us domain name?

All .us domain names registered will be issued a Registry Key. This is what you will use to manage these names - it works almost identically to a .nz Domainz Name Holder ID & Password. .us names have something called an AUTHINFO code which is used for changing registrar, just like a .nz UDAI.

5. Which .us names are reserved?

A reserved name is a name that is not available for general public registration, but rather is subject to additional rules, restrictions or processes. Names are reserved to protect important local and national naming resources to reserve spaces within .us for future enhancement of the domain and to protect technical Internet interoperability. Policy changes relative to the reserved list are subject to Department of Commerce review and approval prior to implementation.

In addition to the specific names contained in this reserved name file, the following categories of names are also reserved:

  • All numbers five digits and higher
  • All numbers in the format five digits-four digits (zip codes)
  • All telephone numbers including toll-free numbers
  • Tagged domain names-all labels with hyphens in the third and fourth character positions
6. Who can register a .us domain name?

Registering a .us name is a little different to registering a .nz domain name. With .nz anyone can register any name they like. To register a .us name you need to meet certain eligibility criteria. Prospective registrants of .us must demonstrate that they have a bona fida presence in the United States in order to register a .us name. The registrant must be one of the following:

  • A natural person (i) who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America or any of its possessions or territories or (ii) whose primary place of domicile is in the United States of America or any of its possessions, or
  • Any entity or organization that is incorporated within one of the fifty (50) U.S. states, the District of Columbia, or any of the United States possessions or territories or (ii) organized or otherwise constituted under the laws of a state of the United States of America, the District of Columbia, or any of its possessions or territories, or
  • An entity or organization (including federal, state, or local government of the United States, or a political subdivision thereof) that has a bona fide presence in the United States. See Section B.3.1 of the NeuStar proposal to the Department of Commerce for details concerning what constitutes a "bona fide presence".
